Winter Skin Care

The cold weather is in full force for us in the Northeast. With the change in seasons comes a change in our skincare needs. Ladies with dry skin at baseline will struggle even more to keep the cracked and irritated feeling at bay. For those of you with more oily skin types, you may not notice a huge difference in your skin, but a little bit of tweaking will keep you glowing ‘til warmer weather graces us again.

Some helpful tips for winter:

  1. Shower Routine: Keep your showers short or your water warm—hot water dries us out. I know I know, don’t shoot the messenger! I too love a long hot shower, especially on the weekends. But overindulging in this can leave you looking and feeling like a lizard. My trick: I start the shower hot to take the edge off of an icy morning, then drop it down once the room steams up. Steamy air = amazing moisture for you once you get out;) And don’t forget to slather on a rich cream from head to toe while your skin is still damp, this will increase the amount your skin absorbs, to help you fight the harsh elements all day long.

  2. Swap out your regular moisturizer for something rich in ceramides and humectants, oradd a hydrating serum to your routine. Great brands include Vanicream, SkinMedica HA5, Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Serum, and CeraVe night renewal cream. For hands, I cannot get through my day without Aquaphor. It’s considered an occlusive, which means it will lock in your body’s own moisture.

  3. Cut back on your exfoliating or Retin-A regimens if you notice your skin is getting more flaky and irritated

  4. Use a humidifier in your home, especially if you are cranking your heat up or getting that fireplace roaring more regularly.

  5. Drink more water. No eye rolls please! Hydration starts from within. Besides, there are so many reasons to increase your H2O consumption, let your new impetus be beautiful glowing winter skin.
