There have been several reports in the media of women undergoing buttock augmentation, or Brazilian butt lift (BBL), and dying shortly after the procedure. Some of these happened after the patients sought out cheaper surgery in another country such as the Dominican Republic; others simply had industrial-grade silicone injected into their buttocks in a friend’s kitchen or in the back of a nail salon.
THIS IS TRAGIC.
These were mostly young women, many with young children. No surgery is without risks. However one must stop and think, to what end is body modification "on the cheap" worth risking your life?? Known as medical tourism, there has been an increasing trend to go to tropical places on "vacation" for more affordable plastic surgery. Unfortunately you don't know the experience, training, or techniques/sterility being practiced in these locations, which can not only compromise your results, but also put your overall health in jeopardy too.
In the hands of a properly trained board-eligible/board-certified plastic surgeon, this surgery can be performed safely. It is SO important that if you are considering undergoing any procedure to enhance your look, to do so with a surgeon who has had the proper training for it. Don’t be afraid to ask during your consultation where your surgeon trained and in what field they are certified. Your life may depend on it.
